"The mud-splattered wall and glass window gridded with red tape instead contribute to an aesthetics of modernist painterly surfaces, abstractions torn from the specific places that orient documentary photography and its politics." --Benjamin Young, Artforum
There is much that can be said about Mthethwa's process, his collaboration with his sitters, the waves of culture in which we exist, the politics of capturing poverty on camera. These topics are so vast, though, and there's other people who say it better. But it's absolutely a fall goal of mine to get to Inner Views, at the Studio Museum through October.
